The heavy rain of the past two nights mocked my feeble attempts to patch up the conservatory roof and water is still getting in. I suppose I can console myself with the fact that it is significantly less water than it would have been had I not done anything, but I'm still disappointed. I see that rain isn't forecast for the next few days, so I might have to venture up the ladder once more when everything has dried out and try again.

I made more progress decluttering. I managed to throw away things that I'd been holding on to for ages for sentimental reasons by asking myself if I'd bother to bring them with me if I moved house. The answer was no, so why am I keeping them in this house? I did keep a picture of Dad from a work event though. I should probably throw it cos I have no idea who the men with him are, but now that he's gone I'm constantly aware that there are a finite number of pictures of him in existence.

In more uplifting news, I got a Switch. A free Switch, as I like to tell everyone, cos I had enough Nectar points to cover the cost. I've been collecting points for many years now and they were building up so high I thought I should probably use them. I really liked the idea of spending them on something specific (and fun) rather than just putting them towards normal shopping, and thus, free Switch! Now I just need to find the time to play it. My friend gave me Breath of the Wild as a belated birthday present and I'm enjoying it so far but I've only played it once!

I did find time to watch the most recent episodes of Lower Decks, which I am still absolutely loving. Especially the latest episode with all the simulations, which was pretty much one giant basket of Easter eggs (although do they still count as Easter eggs when they're so overt?) I've also now started Ted Lasso, which is great. I did not expect Rebecca to be so mean though! Clearly all those gifs and posts on Tumblr misled me.

And apparently certificates and pin badges are the in thing right about now cos hot on the heels of the ones I got for blood doning I've now received ones from Mensa for being a member for 20 years. Which is funny, cos it'll actually be 25 years in December so this must be a new thing they've suddenly introduced. Probably as a way to keep people from leaving.

Happy Friday the 13th everyone!

Lately I've been feeling particularly stressed and unhappy, especially at work, and worrying about pretty much everything, which is not fun. So in this entry I'm going to try and be positive and focus on things that have made me happy recently:

1. Tormund. He's just such a sweetheart and I love him so much! He seems to have settled in well and looks happy here with us, which is wonderful. He still sleeps by the side of my bed. He loves going out in the car. We take him for walks up the woods nearby and he is so well behaved. He's so well behaved in lots of ways, really. We've discovered that he knows his name and will come when called. He knows 'sit' and 'wait' too. He barks when people come to the door, which is actually quite reassuring, but doesn't make noise for no reason. So far he hasn't chewed up anything or made a mess in the house, which to be honest we were kinda expecting due to nervousness and being in a new place.

2. Star Trek: Lower Decks. I've been meaning to watch this series for ages and finally got around to it the other day and I absolutely love it! It's so much fun! It's a great series in its own right with its own characters and storylines, but I do really love all the references to previous Star Treks. It's like a love letter to Trekkies and part of me does wonder how much it will appeal to newcomers, but then it's not really intended for them. That's one of the things I particularly like about it too. They don't explain the references they make, they just expect us to get them. And I love, love, love Beckett Mariner. I mean I love pretty much all of them, but especially Mariner.

3. Sims 4: Seasons. I've been considering buying the Seasons expansion pack for a while now but wasn't sure it was worth the money. So I decided to buy it on a bundle deal along with the Realm of Magic game pack and Spooky Stuff stuff pack. I haven't really done much with the latter two yet, although I am looking forward to delving into the magical realm, but I'm really enjoying Seasons so far. I love how pretty the weather is. And I do like how the different weather affects my Sims, even if it does make some tasks harder. Previously I could stick an easel in the garden and have my Sims practice any time of day, but now they get upset if I make them paint in the rain. And gardening is more challenging cos the plants only grow when they're in season, rather than all the time like before. I also absolutely love the thunderstorms. I know people say they get old quickly cos of how scared your Sims get, but I just love the atmosphere they give. It makes me feel like I'm safe and warm inside while a storm rages on outside.

It's been a while since I've made a post about TV shows and with quite a few of them coming back this month this seems like a good time to talk about what I've been watching recently...

Potential spoilers ahead...

I've been loving Star Trek Discovery so far but I must admit I felt a little let down by that finale...

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope 2018 is treating you all well.

January is that wonderful time of year when all our favourite shows return to our screens. Well, almost all of them (*cough* looking at you E4 *cough*) so I thought I would make another post about what I'm watching. Specifically the sci-fi...

Ok, I keep saying I'm going to make a TV post and never seem to get round to it and I think the problem is that I'm overthinking things. so I'm just going to make a post now and hope it make sense.

Some spoilers ahead, which I've put behind LJ cuts...

Things I Have Been Watching This Year:

Anne With An E:

I started watching this a few months ago but only got about halfway through. I may try to finish it at some point but the trouble is that Anne is so incredibly irritating I'd have sent her back myself at the earliest opportunity. Canada is very pretty though.

~

Stranger Things:

I heard such good things about this series for ages before I finally binge watched the first season earlier this year. It was so good and I was very excited to watch season two as soon as it was released. And it didn't disappoint, although it did break my heart.

~

Once Upon a Time:

I still maintain that this show has finished. What is currently being aired is a different show that happens to have the same name (a bit like season 9 of Scrubs). I tried watching one episode and it was terrible. Absolutely terrible. I might give it another go cos it feels a bit unfair to give up so soon, but it's not at the top of my list.

~

The Handmaid's Tale:

This is another one that I've started but not finished. Not because I don't like it but because it's pretty hard going. I read the book a few years ago so I know the story, but it's still a difficult watch.

~

The Good Place:

I am LOVING this show. The first season was only released in the UK at the end of August so I'm a bit late to the party but I'm so glad I gave it a chance when I was flicking through Netflix wondering what to watch. And, fortunately, we're not being made to wait for season two. We get the episodes the day after they're shown in America, which is brilliant but does mean I'm always left wanting more!

Spoilers Ahead! )

~

Star Trek Discovery:

I was wary going into this because I've been a lifelong Star Trek fan and the last time I got excited about a new series it was the exceedingly disappointing Enterprise. But so far Discovery has really impressed me. It didn't really feel like Star Trek to me, at least not until 'Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad', which had that good old Trek staple of time travel. I love time travel episodes. And when I say that it didn't feel like Star Trek, I'm not saying that I didn't like it. It's different, but that doesn't mean bad.

I love Tilly. And not just because she shares her name with my dog. She's a wonderful ray of sunshine and I hope only good things happen to her. I also love Stamets and Culber and their relationship.

Major Spoilers Ahead! )

Happy Doctor Who Day! 54 years ago today the very first episode aired. And four years ago today I was in London to watch the 50th Anniversary Special in Covent Garden cinema. Four years ago tomorrow I went to the Doctor Who 50th Celebration convention at the ExCel. That was a good weekend.

Talking about TV, I do keep meaning to make a post about what I'm watching at the moment but between entering the super-busy Christmas period at work and still trying to de-clutter the house and de-bramble the garden at home I never seem to find the time. I can say that it'll definitely include Star Trek Discovery and The Good Place, both of which I am loving at the moment.

And talking about Christmas, I'm doing pretty well with my plan to get my Christmas shopping done early. I'm doing most of it online and everyone's getting food and drink. It just makes so much more sense to get them tasty things I know they'll enjoy rather than risking getting something that'll just sit around gathering dust. (This decision may have been influenced by the sheer amount of stuff we already have in our house.) I have bought a few non-edible items too, but the majority has been food.

And talking about food, I'm hungry. Time for me to head off and make dinner. Bye!

Seven years ago I made my Ships of the Noughties list. Recently it was suggested to me by [livejournal.com profile] dustinw5220 that I make a similar list for the nineties. I decided to expand on that a bit to include a whole century rather than just a decade because why not? As usual I found it difficult to decide which ships to include, so before we reach the main event I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge some of my favourite couples who didn't quite make the cut:

Honourable Mentions )

I've also decided not to double up, so Mulder/Scully, Xena/Gabrielle, Tom/B'Elanna, Harm/Mac, Willow/Tara, Piper/Leo, John/Aeryn, and Charlie/Zoey are not featured in this list because I already included them in my Ships of the Noughties.

And now, without further ado, I present to you...

HEY GUYS, IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW, ROUND ONE HAS STARTED OVER AT [livejournal.com profile] f_march_madness! YOUR FAVOURITE CHARACTERS NEED YOUR HELP!

IF YOU DON'T WATCH THE SHOWS, THEN MY FAVOURITE CHARACTERS NEED YOUR HELP!

ALSO SAMANTHA CARTER AND CHLOE SULLIVAN. THEY HAVE NO CHANCE AGAINST SCULLY AND OLIVIA, BUT THEY'RE STILL AWESOME AND DESERVE SOME LOVE.

AND I THINK I CAN OFFICIALLY SAY THAT I'M NOT GOING TO WIN THE OFFICE POOL! I SERIOUSLY OVERESTIMATED THE LEVEL OF KONO SUPPORT. WHILE I'M HAPPY THAT BRENNAN IS WINNING HER POLL SO THOROUGHLY, IT DOES COMPLETELY SCREW UP MY BRACKET!

This is an entry. I am writing it and I am going to post it, even if it sucks, because it's been far too long now and I can feel I'm withdrawing into myself again, which I don't want to do.

Newswise, the pressures of retail claimed another employee this week as someone I work with walked out. He just left without telling anyone. I did feel bad for him because there have been many, many times when I've felt like it was all getting to be too much and I just wanted to walk away and escape. But when he phoned up later to explain himself he said that he wanted to mess us about. So he's fired.

Speaking of work, I have quite a bit of holiday left so I'm trying to use it up before it expires at the end of March. I have today and tomorrow as holiday, which is lovely, especially as I didn't get a proper day off over Christmas and New Year. I spent most of today making up a historical globe Puzzleball while watching Star Trek. A very productive way to spend a day I feel.

I'm not sure what the plan is for tomorrow yet. Possibly a jigsaw puzzle. Possibly some Lego. Truly I am the coolest person alive. =D

There is a CSI: The Experience in Birmingham! Of course I would discover this less than a week before it ends meaning I have no time to go. Oh well, just more reason to get round to organising that trip to Las Vegas. I just hope I don't end up missing the one there too. (I'm still sad that Star Trek: The Experience has closed, that would have been cool.)

And just in case anyone was wondering, I'm not reading my Friends List at the moment cos I haven't seen the finale of Bones and I don't want to be spoiled for any of it. (I am aware that I really should get round to watching it soon cos the longer I wait the higher the chances are that I'll come across a spoiler somewhere accidentally. It's happened before that I've been spoiled for something while reading something else that had nothing to do with it. But if I wait one more day I can watch it properly on TV so I'm going to take my chances and just avoid most of the internet until then. I'll play LOTRO instead!)

Scene It!

Guess what guys! I now own the Star Trek Scene It? game! We must play this!

As an example of my awesome Star Trek knowledge I would like to share with you the events of about a week ago. When we were watching CSI and a woman was shown in profile and not very well lit and I went "Hey, it's Rosalind Chao!" That's right, I recognise recurring guest actors by the sides of their faces! I'm just that good.

It covers all five Star Trek series so hopefully there's something for everyone. =D

So, the current [livejournal.com profile] picspammy challenge is Fifty and as I'm a big shipper I thought doing 50 Shippy TV Moments would be a good idea. I've never actually posted to the community before so I'm a bit nervous about this though.

Anyway, here's the picspam. I hope you like it! And if you disagree with any of my choices or think I've left any obvious ones out please say so in the comments.

Ok, so I'm really getting into this list thing, although I do wish I could think up a better name for them than 'lists'.

This time I have done a picspam celebrating my favourite redheaded ladies from television.

This list came about because I was watching a programme about the greatest TV shows of the decade. It was a terrible list that made no sense and made me quite angry so I decided to write my own. But instead of TV programmes I decided to do pairings that I’ve supported from the past ten years. They bring me squee and sadness in equal measure yet I still ship my little heart out.

The Rules: For a ship to be included it must have existed, at least in part, during the ten years spanning 2000 to 2009. So ships from programmes that started in the nineties and ran into the noughties are ok, but ships from programmes that finished before 2000 are not, even if I discovered/continued shipping them in the noughties. (Sorry Maddie/David.)

Because there was no way I was going to be able to put these in order of preference (I love them all!) I’ve listed them in chronological order instead:

You have to be with the person you love. )

I'm glad to see the Queen has come to her senses and corrected what I have long thought to be an inexcusable oversight in the New Year Honours List.

I raise my glass to you, Sir Patrick Stewart.

The cat was sick on my bed last night. Lovely. I decided it was a good excuse to buy myself a new quilt, a nice thinner one for summer, which means it's going to be freezing cold now.

The Prison Break recaps are coming along. I find myself struggling to write though, as though my mind is foggy and I can't quite work out what I want to say. It's the same reason why I don't update LJ as much as I should. I want to make posts but I can't think of how to say what I want to.

Anyway, there's not much Prison Break left. In fact I believe the finale is on in the States tonight, so I may have to avoid PB related internet sites for a few days. It's not too long until we get it here, only Tuesday. I can last four days. I think.

Actually, with the way I've been playing Lord of the Rings Online recently, I haven't been visiting sites nearly as much as I used to, so it shouldn't be a problem. I'll just have to be careful on LJ.

Also, I'm going to see Star Trek tomorrow and it is going to be awesome.
