I have to say, based on the adverts and all the build-up, I expected Downton Abbey to have been a bit more wrapped up last night than it turned out to be. I suppose Mary getting married was something, even if it did happen ridiculously quickly, but all their declarations of love fell a bit flat cos Henry's left no impression on me whatsoever and it felt like their wedding came out of nowhere. I know their romance has supposedly been building all season, but it hasn't felt like it. (In fact this is the first time all year I've actually remembered his name, which says a lot about how invested I've been in this storyline!)

At least they finally acknowledged that Mary might have some issues being married to a man who races cars when her first husband died in a car crash. Of course this only merited a short scene and then it was all forgotten again, but still. That's probably the best you can hope for with Downton now.

And I still think Bertie's going to go back to Edith. That's going to happen in the Christmas special. It has to.

Anyway, onto the November meme. Topic 5 is Favourite Romantic Pairing:

Now, I know I've been saying that pretty much every single topic so far is a tricky one, but this is definitely the hardest yet. Shipping is such a huge part of my fandom life and, as with TV shows, I usually go through stages of being super obsessed with a ship for a while before finding a new one and becoming super obsessed with that, but just because my super-obsession has moved on doesn't mean that I don't still love the old pairings or ship them any less. So rather than trying to pick one, I'm going to go with a top ten eleven in no particular order:

1. Eleven/River (Doctor Who)
2. Roslin/Adama (BSG)
3. Sydney/Vaughn (Alias)
4. Willow/Tara (Buffy)
5. Michael/Sara (Prison Break)
6. Chuck/Sarah (Chuck)
7. Xena/Gabrielle (Xena)
8. Castle/Beckett (Castle)
9. Max/Logan (Dark Angel)
10. Mulder/Scully (The X Files)
11. Brennan/Booth (Bones)

Even this was difficult and I keep thinking of other pairings that I could have put on the list. I may have a bit of a shipping problem...

On the 22nd May 2006 the very last episode of Alias aired for the first time.

Now, over nine years later, I have finally seen that episode.

(It's weird cos I was so obsessed with Alias when it first came out. I mean, you know how you have shows you kinda like? And then shows you love? And then shows you really love? And then shows you absolutely adore so much that waiting a week for the next episode seems unbearable and you spend hours and hours on the message boards talking about it and making loads of friends and you all go crazy during each hiatus wondering how the cliffhanger is going to be resolved and your pour your heart and soul into your OTP reading every scrap of fanfiction you can find and just thinking about the characters and their relationships makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside? Yeah, Alias was the latter for me.

When I say I was obsessed, I mean I was obsessed. At least at the beginning.

It was a combination of going to uni and the rather disappointing season 3 that meant I fell out of touch with it. But going back and rewatching early episodes/watching later ones for the first time, so many of those old feelings have come flooding back. I may have to make a proper entry about my thoughts on the finale. And I am seriously tempted to do a screencap recap of the whole series. I'm a bit unsure cos it's a lot of time and effort for something that no one else will read, but I do enjoy re-reading my old Prison Break recaps sometimes so maybe I should just do it for myself anyway.)

The heatwave is over and I have not melted into the ground! Work still makes me hot and sweaty, especially in the abominable furnace that is the upper stock room, but at least I can feel comfortable when I get home now. As opposed to a couple of days ago when there was no escape from the relentless heat anywhere I went.

Also, I'm getting pretty pissed off with people online making fun of us and calling us wimps for saying that that was a heatwave. Yeah, fine, you live in a place where it regularly gets hotter than this and you have these kinds of temperatures all summer, but that's the point, we don't. We're not prepared for this, our bodies aren't used to it, our homes don't have air conditioning. (And why do people seem to feel the need to exaggerate in order to mock us? I saw a derisive comment laughing that "England is complaining about temperatures in the 70s to mid 80s" and I'm just like uh, no, it was 36 Celsius here you fucknut. That's 97 to you, so shut your fucking cake hole.)

Sorry, I think the heat is making me ratty. Although since it's cooled down now I can't really use that as an excuse any more.

But at least now that the heatwave is over, maybe now I can write about things other than the weather. Like Alias and its complete character derailment of Irina Derevko. I'm hoping that she's been cloned and replaced with a double (again), because that woman from the past couple of episodes is so not the same woman from the rest of the series.

It's Wednesday, which means I have made it over halfway through the week and haven't died! Yay me!

Work has been about as fun as anticipated, although I did manage to dig out an old fan and we've got that set up now. Not that it does much but it's better than nothing! And it seems my employers are actually considerate and don't want their employees to keel over from heat exhaustion and we got some money to buy drinks, which is nice. Also the Costa people came round with free samples of their caramel latte cooler, which was very much appreciated.

I've also closed my curtains so hopefully my room should be a bit more bearable to sleep in tonight. I can't believe it's taken me this long to work out that doing that might be a good idea! (The sun sets right opposite my window, which can make for lovely evenings, but also means that my room is basically cooking for hours and feels like an oven by the time I go to bed.)

I blame the heat for addling my brain. That and the fact that we're not really used to such high temperatures in this country. It almost makes me miss Vegas. The temperatures were higher there, but it was a dry heat and everywhere was air conditioned. What I wouldn't do for some air conditioning right about now!

The upside of all this is that I'm catching up on my TV shows. When I get in from work I'm too worn out and overheated to do much but flop onto the sofa and watch something. I've now finished Orphan Black season one and am making good progress with season five of Alias. I'm not too happy about certain developments though, which I will probably make a post about some time soon despite the fact that no one else is watching this ten year old show or would have any idea what I'm talking about.

I've caught up on Chuck season 3! Yay! The DVD boxset is truly one of the most glorious inventions of our time.

I'm half tempted to do picture recaps for it like I did with Prison Break, but it's a lot of work for something no one will actually read.

Speaking of Prison Break though, I couldn't help but notice certain similarities:

Also, I need to get me some Chuck icons.

So, the current [livejournal.com profile] picspammy challenge is Fifty and as I'm a big shipper I thought doing 50 Shippy TV Moments would be a good idea. I've never actually posted to the community before so I'm a bit nervous about this though.

Anyway, here's the picspam. I hope you like it! And if you disagree with any of my choices or think I've left any obvious ones out please say so in the comments.

Fandom post ahead! I'm not sure if anyone on my friends list is actually going to be interested in this, but I've written it and I'm going to post it.

This list came about because I was watching a programme about the greatest TV shows of the decade. It was a terrible list that made no sense and made me quite angry so I decided to write my own. But instead of TV programmes I decided to do pairings that I’ve supported from the past ten years. They bring me squee and sadness in equal measure yet I still ship my little heart out.

The Rules: For a ship to be included it must have existed, at least in part, during the ten years spanning 2000 to 2009. So ships from programmes that started in the nineties and ran into the noughties are ok, but ships from programmes that finished before 2000 are not, even if I discovered/continued shipping them in the noughties. (Sorry Maddie/David.)

Because there was no way I was going to be able to put these in order of preference (I love them all!) I’ve listed them in chronological order instead:

You have to be with the person you love. )
