This was a bit trickier this year cos I didn't have such strong feelings about a lot of the dresses. And I feel like I could still change my mind over a couple, so it's probably best I post this now before I do just that...

It's (belated) Oscars time! As usual I recorded the ceremony and made sure not to look at any spoilers before I watched it. Part of me wishes I could have stayed up and liveblogged it properly during the night, but I'm too old for that kind of thing now. Even though I do have today off work, so theoretically I could have.

Paul, Emma, and I did our usual predictions game and once again I used Alexa as the Random Number Generator. She made some... interesting... choices.

And even though I didn't stay up, I did do a not-live liveblog for fun and enjoyment. So here we go...

It's Oscar Time )

And we're done. Final scores for the night:

Caroline: 19/23
Emma: 15/23
Paul: 7/23
Alexa: 4/23

VICTORY! Although I do wish I'd been able to keep my winning streak going. I started off so well then it all fell apart at the end!

And now Paul owes us a Nomadland themed cocktail. To go with all the others he still owes us!

Once again I recorded the Oscars and watched it as soon as I got up, making sure not to check my phone or look at anything that might spoil it for me so I went in having no idea who'd won. When I'd been making my predictions I had been tempted to go with Parasite for Best Picture but I decided to play it safe and stick with 1917. Turns out I should have been a bit braver!

I started off so well too, getting all of the first three awards correct, but then it went a bit downhill after that! Things soon picked up again though and I ended up on a pretty decent score.

Emma, Paul and I did our usual predictions game, I used Alexa as the random number generator this year, and Mum even made her own predictions last night to add to the fun. Who was going to win? Drum roll please...

Caroline: 16/24
Emma: 10/24
Paul: 9/24
Mum: 7/24
RNG: 7/24

Yay!

I'm rather impressed with how well the RNG did this year too. But out of those of us playing for a cocktail, Paul once again came last and has to come up with a new recipe based on the Best Picture Winner. I'm not too sure how nice a Parasite cocktail is going to be though...

I'm an old lady now so I didn't stay up until 5am to watch the Oscars live, but I have taken this week off work so I was able to record the ceremony and watch it as soon as I got up. I was careful to avoid any spoilers so it was almost like watching it live as far as not knowing who was going to win.

Emma, Paul and I did our usual predictions game and it was a close race cos after 19 awards Emma and I were tied on 10 points each, and out of the five categories left we'd only differed on one. (It was mathematically impossible for Paul to win at this point, so it was between the two of us.) It all came down to the winner of Best Actress to decide our victor...

Caroline vs Emma...

Glenn Close vs Olivia Colman...

Who's going to be the winner?

(Not Paul, we know that much)

And the final results are...

Emma: 14/24
Caroline: 13/24
Paul: 9/24
RNG: 2/24

Well done Emma and Olivia!

And Paul now owes us another cocktail. He still hasn't delivered the ones from the past two years though. At this rate he'll owe us an entire bar by the time he pays up.

I finally managed to watch the Oscars and while you don't have to suffer through my not-quite-live-blogging of the ceremony this year (cos it felt a bit weird to do it a week later), I'm still going to do my annual dress report:

Ones I Liked )

Ones I'm Not Sure About )

Ones I Didn't Like )

Today was the last day our old store was open and my last day there. I feel quite sad. Ten years I worked in that place, I'm really going to miss it! And I may or may not have gone around saying a fond farewell to the building and contents before I left...

In brighter news, it's Oscars time. Normally I'd try to watch it live or, if I couldn't face staying up until 5am, as soon as I got up on Monday. I wasn't able to do that this year cos of my hours but I do have it recorded and plan to watch the ceremony at the weekend. I knew there was no chance of me avoiding spoilers until then so I didn't even try.

Paul, Emma and I still did our usual predictions game though. And this time Paul managed not to lose to a machine! The final results were...

Caroline: 19/24
Emma: 14/24
Paul: 10/24
Random Number Generator: 3/24

I'm feeling very proud of myself. I got all of the big awards right, including Best Picture, Best Director, all of the acting awards, and both screenplay awards. I only fell down on Original Song, Visual Effects, Documentary, Documentary Short, and Live Action Short. And, really, who cares about those last three?

I'm starting to wish I'd bet actual money on this!

I opted for sleep last night, so welcome to my not-quite-liveblog of the Oscars as I watch my recording. I've been very good about not looking at my phone or listening to the radio or going anywhere that could spoil me, so I'm watching as though it's being shown for the very first time:

This is gonna be long... )

Final Results:

Caroline: 7/10
Emma: 5/10
Random Number Generator: 2/10
Paul: 1/10

Woot! I'm the Oscars champion!
crystalcazzie: (Default)
For the past five months I often found myself thinking "I should post about this on Livejournal" but then I never got round to it and it got to the point where I felt like I couldn't just come back and start posting without talking about how long I'd been away so I just never came back. So now I'm making myself come back cos I want to be able to just pop on here and post about whatever, especially now that I find myself drifting away from Tumblr more and more.

The Oscars are tonight and I'm pretty sure I'm going to record the ceremony and watch it tomorrow. Part of me wants to stay up and liveblog cos I have fond memories of doing that in the past, but I fear I am getting to the age where staying up until 5am just isn't an option. I am slightly tempted to try and not-quite-liveblog it as I watch tomorrow (cos let's face it, no one is going to be reading my posts as they go up and it's really just for my own amusement that I do them) but I'm not sure I can resist the temptation to just have a quick look at other online things and thereby risk spoiling myself about who wins.

Emma has now joined our predictions game, so there's three of us competing this year. But we have pared the categories back to just the main ones. That's probably sensible cos in the past a lot of the awards have been complete guesses cos I have no idea about them (I did look up the difference between sound mixing and sound editing once, but I still don't really understand it and even if I did I still have no idea which film should win!)

As usual I have seen very few of the films nominated this year. And by "few" I mean "two": Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (nominated for production design and costume design) and Hidden Figures (nominated for actual, proper awards!) It's incredibly unusual for me to have seen a Best Picture-nominated film before the ceremony so I'm quite proud of this feat! And while Hidden Figures was a fantastic film, I still think La La Land will win.

Here we have the final results of our predictions game... drum roll please...

Caroline: 47 (14/24)
Paul: 25 (9/24)
Random Number Generator: 12 (3/24)

WOOT! COCKTAIL, HERE I COME!

I successfully managed to predict Best Picture, Best Director, and all the acting awards. I should have bet money on this thing!

*blows dust off journal*

Hey, so I know it's been well over a year since I've actually posted anything here but it's Oscar night and I need to keep myself awake and I have fond memories of liveblogging this event in the past so I thought I would give it another go. Tumblr doesn't really lend itself to the liveblog as well as LJ does.

So far I've seen some people discussing the nominated films and the general consensus seems to be that Selma should have got more nominations, American Sniper is absolutely terrible in every single way, and Boyhood and Birdman are pretentious, overrated and boring. So one of the latter two is definitely going to win then!

As usual Paul and I have made our predictions and this year we have £10 on the line. Well, £10 of something next time I'm in London. If I win I'm going for a cocktail, obviously. I don't know what Paul's thinking of going for, but hopefully I won't find out because I'M GOING TO WIN THIS THING! (maybe)

Also, Mickey from Doctor Who is in the UK studio. It's weird. I keep expecting him to pull out a giant gun and shoot some aliens.

Ooh, dresses! Yes! First up Felicity Jones. Very nice, I approve. =D

Final Scores:

Caroline: 34
Paul: 35
Random Number Generator: 16

So we didn't lose to a machine, which is good. We don't have to hide our heads in shame. I'm still annoyed at not winning after my awesome start, though. I'm also trying to remember why we decided Visual Effects should be worth three points when all the other middle awards (Sound, Editing, Cinematography, etc) were two. Yes, there is an ulterior motive at play here because if Visual Effects had been worth two as well then Paul and I would have tied.

But enough of my bitterness and onto the most exciting part of this post: The Dress Report!

Something just happened. I'm not sure what. But now Sandra Bullock is here to talk about her contact lens so we're back on track.

Film Editing: Argo. Points for Paul and the Random Number Generator.

Adele is singing. She's so good.

Colin Salmon says he likes Adele because "no vocal gymnastics, just a beautiful voice." YES. I hate vocal gymnastics so much.

And now we have Nicole Kidman introducing the final three Best Picture nominees. I've not seen any of these either, but I really do want to see Silver Linings Playbook.

Daniel Radcliffe and Kristen Stewart have just come out. I think Kristen is either drunk or stoned. Possibly both.

Production Design: Lincoln. No points for anyone here.

Hey George Clooney. I know someone on Tumblr who'll be going crazy right about now. Oh, he's doing the In Memoriam section. Time to be sad.

Huh. I was expecting more.

Yay, Chicago cast! It's been ten years since that won? Seriously? Actually yeah, that sounds right. I would have been at uni. I feel old.

Original Score: Life of Pi. Well done, Paul.

Original Song: Skyfall. Excellent speech, Adele! And points all round, including for the Random Number Generator this time.

Dustin Hoffman and Charlize Theron are here to present some writing awards. I wish they'd be a bit quicker about it, I'm really flagging here.

Adapted Screenplay: Argo. No points for us.

Original Screenplay: Django Unchained. Paul is rapidly catching up with me.

Everyone in the studio thinks Ang Lee is going to win best director.

Best Director: Ang Lee, Life of Pi. Congratulations studio.

You keep making jokes about this show being long but you don't do anything about it Seth MacFarlane why do you taunt me in this way I just want to go to bed oh god I need sleep but I've made it this far and I'm going to see it through to the end dammit despite what it's doing to my sanity and my use of punctuation.

Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence. I'm so happy. I love you, Jennifer Lawrence!

They're going through the Best Actor nominees and Hugh Jackman just waved at the camera and I love him so much.

Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis. I love how Meryl Streep read that. Not even the slightest pause, just "and the Oscar goes to Daniel Day-Lewis."

Oh just get on with it and present the award. Oh, Michelle Obama is going to present it is she? No, she's introducing it. Oh god, this is going to take forever. And now she's presenting it.

Best Picture: Argo.

Does this mean I can sleep now? Oh thank god. I shall be back tomorrow, or later today rather, to add up the scores but at first glance I think Paul has won by one point, which pisses me off so much after I started so well!

Goodnight!
