This time last week I was in Leeds, ready for the very first official UK Jigsaw Puzzle Competition:

Ok, so the title isn't as fun and alliterative as St Albans Saturday but I wanted to continue the theme started last week.  Yes, in a strange turn of events I went out and met up with friends two weekends in a row!  Funny how I can go literal months without doing anything social and then it all happens at once!

Also funny is that that wasn't the only thing I did on Saturday.  I also went to the village church Jigsaw Puzzle Festival and stocked up on a few puzzles:

Poor Tormund really didn't like the storm last night. (I didn't either cos there was so much rain and I was so stressed worrying about it getting in.) He asked to go out around 3am, which I wasn't happy about, but shot back in at the sound of thunder so hopefully he's learned that it's safer inside than out! He was still unsettled though and didn't want to come into my room with me so I stayed with him on his bed in Rob's room. That seemed to help and he stayed there the rest of the night, which was good. Hopefully tonight will be calmer.

In other news, our ancient tumble dryer no longer works. Our washing machine technically has a dryer setting and I tried to use that but it's beyond terrible so we've ordered a new dryer. We didn't want to be buying stuff before moving but I don't think we can go without one. It's not like the weather is conductive to drying clothes outside at the moment!

(Also I think it says a lot about me that when I went online to look up tumble dryers I misspelt 'tumble' as 'tumblr' every single time...)

In decluttering news I've been strict with myself about having a proper wardrobe purge. I have so many dresses that don't properly fit me any more and I'd not be happy wearing, but I've kept them just in case I lose weight in the future. I have to admit that that's not likely to happen and if it does I can always buy new clothes. A lot of these dresses are from a decade ago so it'll be good to have something new anyway. I'm in my 40s now, maybe I should have a new style! And my aim is to have a wardrobe where I can just reach in and grab something and know it will fit me comfortably.

This has also been a reminder to me to actually wear my nice clothes and not save them. A depressing number of the dresses I'm donating still have their tags on cos I felt like they were too nice for everyday wear and should be kept for something special. But all that happened was that I never got to wear them at all. Still, hopefully somebody else will love and wear them now and they'll raise decent amounts of money for Phyllis Tuckwell.

Speaking of money, I got an offer from VCC for £76 for my box. Not a huge amount but since the main goal was to get the stuff out of the house anything's a bonus.

Happy Witch Pumpkin!

I carved it yesterday so it would be ready to sit in the front porch today. I've bought some sweets in case of Trick or Treaters too, but part of me kinda hopes we don't get any cos Tormund will bark like crazy if anyone comes to the door!

If they do come though, they'll be greeted not only by my pumpkin but also by the pretty cat decoration I have hanging up to welcome any visitors...

Happy First Day of Autumn!

I walked into town yesterday and had my first Pumpkin Spice Latte of the year:

Untitled

It was very good. And I'm seriously considering making walking into town for seasonal coffee a regular thing.

I'm feeling very autumnal today and wanted to reflect that in my clothing choices, so I'm wearing my new dress, fair isle jumper, tights and ankle boots, all reddish-purple in colour to match the season.

Another exciting thing about this time of year is TV. Tonight sees the first proper episode of Strictly Come Dancing (the launch show having been on last week) and I'm very excited for it. I have champagne in the fridge to watch with and I'm looking forward to seeing which pairing I want to claim as my favourite. Based entirely on how well they dance, obviously. No other consideration at all!

Taskmaster and Star Trek: Lower Decks are also back and I'm enjoying them both very much. And The Great British Bake Off returns next Tuesday, which is one of those shows that always feels very cosy and autumnal to me.

Speaking of baking, a couple of days ago I made some red wine brownies. I deviated from the recipe a bit, which I know you're not supposed to do in baking, but they turned out really well:

And they taste great with stilton!

Hey all, I hope everyone is enjoying September so far. Here I am all excited for the weather to change so I can wear my pretty autumnal dresses and ankle boots and warm jumpers and instead we get some of the hottest days of the year!

The wedding went well. The train strikes caused a bit of bother but we made it. It wasn't an overly formal affair, which was nice. There were cocktails (I had an amazing one with rum and cinnamon that was set on fire before being served!) and dinner was Vietnamese street food. I saw some people I haven't seen in years, which was lovely. I tried dancing briefly but I'm so awkward and I hated it so I didn't make myself do any more. For such a social situation I thought I managed pretty well, even if I did feel a bit overwhelmed and worn out by the end. I felt completely wiped out on the Sunday. Fortunately the trains were back to normal so I was able to get home relatively easily, even though I spent the whole journey feeling like I was about to burst into tears.

So all in all it was a good weekend. And I am now the only unmarried member of our pub quiz team.

As I think everyone knows by now, England did not win the World Cup. This means that Meg is once again the family sweepstakes winner and will take home the chocolate golf footballs. That's twice in a row now. I'm starting to suspect she's rigging the whole thing, although I'm not quite sure how since I'm the one running it all...

Speaking of things I'm doing, I'm once again trying to declutter my wardrobe. As usual I have started full of good intentions that will probably not last long, but I've made up a pretty good bag of donations already and next I'm planning to go through other areas and be harsh with myself. I have to admit that a lot of my clothes aren't comfortable any more cos I have put weight on and it seems silly to keep them around on the off-chance that I lose it again. I can always buy new clothes if that happens! (And this is where I admit that the impetus for this clear out is the fact that I'm really tempted to buy a new autumn wardrobe anyway. I've been hit by a sudden craving for fair isle jumpers!)

I've also applied to renew my passport. It doesn't expire until January but it's now more than ten years old which means a lot of countries won't let me in with it. I went to a proper photo booth to have my picture taken cos they say that's more likely to be accepted than one done at home. The booth said it passed their checks but when I tried to apply with it it was immediately rejected as being unsuitable cos I was too close to the camera. So that's a bit annoying and a waste of money. I then spent ages wandering around the house trying to find somewhere with a plain background and light that didn't cast a shadow over half my face so I could take one myself. My first submission, taken by someone else, was called poor and likely to be rejected. My second, that I took myself, was was called good, so I used that one and now have to hope that whoever it is who does the actual passports agrees that it's all right. I look like a convict in it, but I think that's part of the requirement for being an acceptable passport photo so will hopefully work in my favour.

This time last week I was up in Oxford for Paul's wedding. And, amazingly, I'm going to post about it in a reasonable timeframe rather than six months later. What is this madness?

Tying the Knot )

So yes, a very lovely few days and a beautiful wedding! Which hopefully bodes well for their future together!

As we all know by now I love taking pictures, and I'm quite shocked that I neglected to add any to my previous two entries. I shall rectify that now with some snaps taken over the weekend...

Maybe I should have frozen it and taken it on Antiques Roadshow in fifty years time as a valuable collectable. But I ate it instead.

2. A pretty flower outside my house:

Once again I am very impressed by my phone's camera. Especially since the flower was blowing around in the wind a bit.

3. Games Night:

Yes, my team is winning at Catan. And the Corgi Juice was a huge hit!

I went up to London yesterday to go to the Science Museum with a couple of friends from my pub quiz team. We went to the Power UP exhibit, which promised a "hands-on, fully interactive gaming event" that turned out to be a whole load of computers set up in a big room to play games on. At the back wall there was a timeline of computers/consoles from 1976 to 2006, including the BBC Micro that I have very fond memories of. I played Repton and Chuckie Egg on their original platform for the first time in decades! I also played Pac Man on an Atari 2600, which was pretty cool.

I wandered around some of the other areas to investigate what else they had. I tried to avoid things I could easily play at home, but still ended up playing Theme Hospital for quite a while! I decided to give Minecraft a go cos I've heard so much about it, but I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing or how to control anything. I think that was one of my main issues with the event; if you hadn't played the game already it was a bit difficult to get into it. A basic information sheet next to each game would have been helpful.

I also wish there had been more old school games. Things I remember from the past but aren't readily available now. They had DuckTales, which I tried but couldn't remember how to play, but no QuackShot. I'd have loved to have played that again!

I played Sonic on the XBox 360, which I didn't even realise was a thing. I love Sonic, but have only played the traditional Mega Drive style, so the 3Dness was a bit weird. I did enjoy it though.

Annoyingly they closed the museum at 4, so we were kicked out at 3:30. We all agreed we would have liked to stay longer. And the gift shop was shut, which disappointed me. You know how much I love a gift shop!

We headed straight to the Victoria, where we were joined later by the rest of our quiz team. It was great having the whole team back together again. I think this is our first proper quiz in over two years. Shame we didn't win, but then some of the questions were pretty tricky. I held my own though, providing answers to questions that no one else got, such as "Who has just been announced as the next Doctor Who?" Ncuti Gatwa, and "In which British city was the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest held?" Brighton. I was also pleased with myself for being able to instantly say that the Premier League began in 1992. I have no interest in football, but that's a useful fact I know for situations just like this!

All in all it was a good day. Wonderful to see people again, and I must admit that things did feel very close to being back to normal. The main thing that seems to have stuck around after the pandemic is the QR codes, which I do actually love. Being able to order my next drink at the table and have it appear without ever having to leave my seat is rather magical!

Also, because I was going to the Science Museum I felt it appropriate to wear my space dress:

As 2021 draws to a close, I can say it's definitely been a... year. Probably a better one than 2020, but then the bar was set pretty damn low for that.

I hope everyone had a good Christmas. It was nice that Rob was able to join us this year, so it was the three of us again. What was less nice is that Tormund still doesn't like him being here. It's weird, if Rob is standing or sitting still then Tormund is absolutely fine, and sometimes even friendly, but as soon as Rob moves even a little then Tormund's back to barking and growling at him. I wish I knew what was going through that dog's head.

My week since Christmas has been pretty tiring. One of our managers is sick, so I've been opening every day and trying to keep on top of everything. On Monday I was by myself for the first hour we were open, which was not ideal!

I went to the hairdresser earlier and saw a new stylist cos my previous one left (I'm assuming that cutting my hair was such an overwhelming experience she had no choice but to give up her vocation and move to the wilderness). He was really nice. He also said my hair was very stubborn and did what it wanted when he was trying to style it. So I'm glad to know that my constant failures at getting my hair to behave aren't just due to my lack of ability!

I also got complimented twice on my clothing choices by two separate people. One of the ladies in the salon said she loved my jumper and then as I was walking back another lady said "that's a fabulous dress you've got on". So that was lovely.

Pics of my Hair and Jumper. Fabulous Dress Not Visible )

My plan for tonight is to try and stay awake until midnight to see in the new year with a glass of champagne. I might struggle, as I was up at 6 this morning, but I don't have work tomorrow so I can crash immediately after and sleep as long as I want Tormund will let me.

It's December! Which means it's Christmas time! We're allowed to wear Christmas jumpers at work now and you better believe I'm rocking mine every day. I've amassed quite a collection over the years so I'm trying to wear them strategically, starting with the more generic snowflakes and penguins at the beginning of the month and moving up to the really Christmassy ones as we get closer to the big day itself.

December also means Advent Calendars and once again we're not skimping on our selection. This year we have Cadbury's, Lindt, Lego Harry Potter, Playmobil, Dogs Trust, Gin, Wine, Tea, and the reusable one that I've filled up again for Mum. This time it contains pieces of a jigsaw puzzle which she'll have to assemble in order to make a picture which is a clue to the code needed to open the combination lock that I'm going to secure her main present with. Obviously. =D

Of course December also means work gets extremely busy and stressful. I hope I can keep my good cheer going all month but I think it's going to be difficult at times.

This weekend I'm going to London to do Christmassy things with Paul. One of which is the now traditional sing-along screening of Muppet Christmas Carol. We're also hoping to get the train to Canterbury to check out their Christmas market, as well as riding the Mail Rail at the Postal Museum and checking out the Museum of Architecture's Gingerbread City at Somerset House.

I know I still have a couple of Wales photo posts to make, but they're probably not going to get done until next year now. I've also paused in writing the fic I was working on, but I am hoping to keep going with that as well when I have more time. Also, as at least one person knows, I'm planning to do a Ships of the 2010s list as a follow up to my Ships of the Noughties list and my Ships of the Twentieth Century list. So I am rapidly filling up my time after Christmas as well!
crystalcazzie: (Default)
Happy December, everyone! The Christmas season is officially upon us and my journal has a shiny new festive theme to celebrate.

We don't have any decorations up yet (it's still a bit too early for that), but of course we have our Advent Calendars out and ready to go. And yes, that is calendars plural. We have two chocolate ones (Hotel Chocolat for me, Lindt for Mum), a dog treats one for Tilly, a wine one (I'm currently drinking the Prosecco that was behind the first door), a Lego City one, and the M&S beauty one. I've also refilled a couple of solid box-based ones from a couple of years ago with new sweets, so technically we have a total of eight between us. And, no, I don't think that's too many. =D

Also, we're allowed to wear Christmas jumpers at work all this month, so I went in rocking my red and white patterned one today. I did wonder if it was just going to be me on my lonesome, but two other people turned up in jumpers as well so I wasn't the only festive one there.

This weekend we're planning to do a proper clear out of the area where the tree is going to go. I'm not sure when we're going to actually go out and get it though. We don't want to put it up too early and have it lose all its needles before Christmas Day!

It's FRIDAY! And it's AUTUMN!

I decided to celebrate the first day of autumn by getting a Pumpkin Spice Latte on my way to work this morning. And I'm currently wearing some of the new clothes that I bought last week. I probably spent too much money but I can't bring myself to mind cos I love them so much! They're so pretty and autumnal!

I'm feeling a bit autumn-obsessed at the moment and currently trying to see if there's anything fun and seasonal to do in London. It'd be nice to have the chance to wear my new clothes out and about, but if not I'll just have to have fun at home. Strictly does start tomorrow, which I'm very excited about!

I haven't been here for a while because when I wrote my last entry I'd actually been planning to say more but was having trouble putting my thoughts into words and it was so frustrating that I decided to just post my 10,000 steps pic and avoid LJ for a week. Because that's the sensible and mature way to handle things.

I did consider trying to write about it now, but I think it best to just draw a line under it and move on. So, moving on...

Last night I went to Emma's for her second hen party; this time it was an old school style sleepover with a superhero theme. I dressed up as Supergirl and took along my comic book shoes, which people seemed rather impressed by. Emma suggested I wear them to her actual wedding (which will also have a superhero theme) but I'm not sure I can wear heels that high for that long!

It was a nice evening, not least because all seven of us have known each other for years now, having gone to the same secondary school, and I love that we're still friends even after all these years. But at the same time it's terrifying to realise exactly how many years it has been. (FIFTEEN! We left school FIFTEEN YEARS AGO!)

This morning, after everyone else had gone, Emma and I continued the old school sleepover tradition of finishing off the leftover chocolate for breakfast. I mentioned wanting to watch Agent Carter so we found an episode. Unfortunately it was the sixth episode so Emma had to keep telling me who people were, but it was good. And I really must get round to actually watching it from the beginning!

And, here, have some pictures of me as Supergirl with my comic book shoes of awesome because I actually look pretty good:

Ack, it's cold. I just took Tilly out and I think it's actually freezing out there.

My Tardis skirt arrived today. It took nearly a month to get here and I'm actually really disappointed with it. It's more grey than blue and doesn't look very good at all. Oh well, live and learn I suppose. I'm just sad because it looked so good in the picture and I waited so long for it.

And now the cat is meowing at me. And sitting under my chair. Weird kitty.

My Doctor Hoo t-shirt arrived today. Now I'm just waiting for my Tardis skirt. Yay.

Early entry today because I'm about to head off to a house-warming. *insert jokes about fire and/or giant blankets here*

I have a Tardis impressionism t-shirt! It is awesome!

I'm also still really tired and I don't know why. That's less awesome.
crystalcazzie: (Default)
I've just bought a Tardis skirt from Etsy. It's the third Doctor Who-related item of clothing that I've bought in the last month. Someone should probably take Paypal away from me while I still have money in my account.

A couple of weeks ago this post came across my dash on Tumblr and I was inspired to try my hand at making my own comic book heels.

I didn't have high hopes about my ability to produce anything even halfway decent but I'm actually really pleased with how they turned out:

As I said on Tumblr, I now need somewhere to show them off. Possibly another convention of some sort...
