Snow

The promised snow arrived yesterday and looked very pretty. The promised sleet did not follow so there was still a white blanket over everything this morning. Apparently we're due more next weekend as well.

In news that will surprise precisely no one, I haven't made much progress on my New Year goals. But I have been making a lot of progress in my mission to declutter the house. I'm very much a packrat, a trait which I inherited from both my parents, so our house has an awful lot of stuff in. I cleared a lot of it a few years ago after Dad died but it's piling up again and I need to do a better job of letting go of things that I haven't used in years but for some reason convinced myself would be useful or important some day. I think I'm finally getting there now and I'm feeling quite good about it. I just hope I can keep up this momentum and not fall back into old bad habits.

Work has been quiet recently, which isn't surprising, so my hours have been cut right down. I'm actually quite happy about that at the moment cos it means more time to focus on the house but I hope it's not going to be permanent. I'm not too worried yet cos this has happened before and my hours always go up again, but I will admit to being slightly concerned considering what's happening to a lot of people and businesses right now.

And finally, it's Burns Night so I'm enjoying a wee dram of whisky. And wishing I could go back to Scotland again. I love Scotland.

The snow has arrived and disrupted the best laid plans of mice and managers. My 52 hour work week is not to be as the buses are not running today so I wasn't able to get in at all. I also had to leave early yesterday cos the snow was getting worse and the buses stopped at 7. I spent a lot of yesterday checking travel updates and stressing about the possibility of being stranded if I missed the last bus so I'm actually pretty glad that I wasn't able to get in today cos it meant I didn't have that anxiety.

I'm also torn between feeling relieved about the fact that I don't have to work a dreaded 12 hour shift today and feeling disappointed that I'm not going to get all the money I was looking forward to. It would have been a good amount too cos after 38.75 hours I get paid overtime at time and a half, but alas tis not to be. Still, I've got a 45 hour week next week which, while not being quite as lucrative, will still get me some nice overtime. Assuming, of course, that this snow has gone by then and I'm actually able to go to work!

I've spent my day productively by making Lego sets and watching Bones. I'm now well into season six. I've just passed the Hannah chapter and am looking forward to what's on the horizon for Booth and Brennan. Not so much for what's coming up for Vincent though. *sniff*

And finally, enjoy these pictures of the white stuff that's keeping me at home instead of work right now...

These pots hold the tulip bulbs that I got in Amsterdam and planted last year. They say that tulips need cold weather to grow so they should be doing pretty well at the moment!

Apparently McGee doesn't approve of my decorating skills. From his position in a chair next to the tree he used his paw to pull one of the decorations from its branch and knocked it to the floor. He wasn't even playing with it, he just carefully removed it. I suppose he thinks he could have done a better job. Or maybe he just didn't like that particular decoration itself.

Also, it actually snowed today. Only briefly and then it was gone, but still. It was apparently enough to keep the customers away for a while. I was thinking about how weird it was not to be completely manic so close to Christmas, so of course we got really busy not long afterwards. Must be all that Multi Coloured Crack that we sell.

And now it is the weekend. Yay! I'm planning to make eggnog tomorrow and hopefully watch something Christmassy while doing so. Tis the season and all that. =D

Operation Get into the Christmas Spirit is going well. Over the last few days I have made gingerbread biscuits (which were yummy) and eggnog (which was alcoholic and yummy) and plan to do so again later this week. I also managed to wrap almost all of my presents for people and took some pictures of this latest round of snow.

On the viewing front I watched Muppet Christmas Carol (one and a half times), The Santa Clause, The Santa Clause 2, Miracle on 34th Street (1947 version) and Christmas episodes of The Nanny and Caroline in the City.

The first Christmas episode of Caroline in the City came with the added bonus of Lauren Graham as Shelly. This was the first time I'd watched it since seeing Gilmore Girls and now I think I may have to rewatch all the episodes with her in. She's amazingly ridiculous!

Work was extremely busy today, which was entirely expected. Fortunately we had plenty of staff in so it wasn't the stressful mess that it often can be this time of year. I hope this pattern keeps up for the rest of the week!

To finish, I leave you with two pictures I took over the weekend of the snow that I particularly like:

It's 12:24pm on Thursday and I am on Livejournal instead of at work. This is due to the rather large amount of snow outside my house. I did phone up to ask them if they desperately needed me and they said no, but I still feel guilty for not going in.

Apparently it's going to be just as bad tomorrow, which makes me sad cos I'm supposed to be going up to London. I might end up having to wait till Saturday to go, which is annoying cos I took Friday off work so I could have the extra day. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.

For now, though, I think I might head outside and take some pictures of the snow.

Here it is, the last day of November. Now, where are we?

Snow - finally here! Not too much of it, so travel wasn't disrupted, but enough to leave a very pretty white blanket over everything and more flakes falling from the sky almost constantly. It was like a scene from those Christmas films which are always so unrealistic, showing people doing their Christmas shopping in the softly falling snow!

NaNoWriMo - 43,104 words. So technically I've failed. But I feel very accomplished because I have actually finished the story this time! Usually what happens is that I reach the end of November and lose all my momentum. All my other NaNo stories just stop suddenly with no resolution and it never really feels right to go back and continue them so they just stay like that. But not this one!

NaBloPoMo - This post marks my success! I'm sure you will all be pleased that it's coming to an end and you will no longer have to suffer my stupid rambling every day. Rest assured, the stupid rambling will be more spread out from now on.

Rather chilly today, isn't it? Apparently it's -3 outside right now, although there's still no sign of snow here. Come on weather, if we're going to freeze at least give us something pretty to look at while we do so!

Weee, no work for me today! We're not even open so I don't have to feel guilty about not making it in. Instead I have gone out and taken lots of pretty pictures of the snow with my shiny camera.

There is about a foot of snow outside my window, more falling from the sky and I am not going to work today. I tried to call earlier but no one replied. Maybe no one else got in either...

It's really beautiful snow. I wish I had someone here to go play in it with.

In other news, my week's holiday is over and I'm back at work. Oh the joy. And sadly, I still have not developed these psychic powers that customers obviously want me to have.

"My son ordered something at the weekend and I want to check if it's in yet."
"Ok, do you have the reservation number?"
"No. I just wanted to see if it was in."
"Do you know the catalogue number of the item he reserved?"
"No. I just thought that I'd pop in and see if it was ready yet."
"Well, we need to know what he ordered in order to find that out."
"Fine. I'll come back later."

Well, I found it amusing.

Oh, the snow is pretty.

Alas, there is no one around to have snowball fights or build snowmen with.

And the way it's falling off the tree branches so quickly makes it look like it's still snowing. Looks like it won't be long before it all goes.
