I went down to Hastings again last week to look at some houses.  As usual I stayed with Rob and his cats...

"Who are you?  Why are you in our house?"

We went out to a local burger place for dinner.  I had a burger with blue cheese and a pint of their own beer, both of which were very nice indeed.

The next morning I was up before Rob so spent time with one of his cats...

So cute!

So dignified!

We looked at the first house, which I had high hopes for cos it had a lot of space.  Unfortunately it was rather dark and further away from stuff than I would have liked, so I think we're going to have to cross it off our list.

The second house was a lot better.  Not perfect, but we're never going to find perfect, and it does tick an awful lot of our boxes.  I didn't immediately fall in love with it but the more I think about it the more I want it.

We then went to Rye and had lunch in the Mexican restaurant there.  The food was good and they plonked sombreros on our heads.  Fun!

Very nice.

We had a bit of time before viewing the third house so decided to take a walk around Rye.

I think on balance Hastings is better than Rye for most stuff, but I must admit that I do love the idea of living in walking distance of so many gorgeous pubs.

Obligatory Mermaid Street photo.

It is a very pretty town.

And the Rye house was pretty good.  It had a rather nice view and did feel like somewhere I could see myself living, but the kitchen was very small and the way the house was facing meant that the living room wouldn't get any sun in the evenings.  So not ideal.

While in Rye I bought a present for Rob's cats to thank them for sharing their house with me...

Please contain your excitement.

Ooh Rye looks gorgeous. I miss pubs.

Rye is gorgeous. It's one of my favourite places in the world and a large part of me would love to live there, but realistically I think it makes more sense to be in a bigger town with more amenities nearby. I think I like the idea of living in Rye more than I'd actually like living there and would quickly get annoyed by having to travel a long way just to go to normal shops!

The pubs are amazing though. So many beautiful old buildings to drink in!

Is the pub scene in Germany not as good?

Germany doesn't really have the pub culture. I'll go out to a bar or restaurant every now and then but it's not really the same thing. There's nowhere locally I feel comfortable just popping in for a drink. In part though that's because I live in a village and as long as the transport links are good, living in a village is perfectly fine. I can get a bus from right outside my door to the nearest town in 30 minutes, or I can cycle there just as quickly, and there's a train station if I need to go further afield. I don't know Rye particularly well but if the transport links are decent and there's a supermarket then it's perfectly doable.

That's a shame. And a bit surprising, to be honest. I thought Germany would be big on the pub scene!

There is a supermarket in Rye, but it's pretty expensive (it's a local family-based one that doesn't exist outside of East Sussex). There are rumours of an Aldi being built, which has been met with shock and horror from a lot of the local residents!

If there was a bus stop right outside the door I'd be a bit more tempted by the Rye house, but annoyingly it's on the wrong side of town for that. It's just under a mile into town where the train station is and where the buses leave from. That's a perfectly doable walk, of course, but I'm not sure I want to have to do it every single time I go anywhere. The option to just catch the bus would be nice!

Yeah that does sound kind of impractical. Germany has bars but as you know I'm definitely more a pub person.
