Up the Orme

Part 4: Beside the Seaside

And so we reach the final stop on our jaunt around Wales - the seaside resort of Llandudno.



This is the view from our hotel room. Not too shabby!




Llandudno apparently has links with Alice in Wonderland. I did not know that.




You can see our hotel in this pic. No, not the big one, that's The Grand. It's the one that's slightly raised up from the others at the top right of the group of hotels on the left hand side of the photo.



And now you can see the window to our room. It's just below the chimney.




Just in case we forgot where we were, they've helpfully carved it into the hillside. Useful if you're returning home drunk in your boat I guess.


Like all good seaside resorts, Llandudno has a famous pier:



Llandudno Pier. Sorry that the wonkiness of the picture makes it look kinda like a spaceship.

And like all good seaside piers, Llandudno Pier has arcade machines.

Walking back up to our hotel that evening gave us a lovely view of the seafront at night and I took many, many pictures:









The moon was also gorgeous, but notoriously difficult to photograph well.


The next morning dawned bright and clear:



This was actually taken a bit further up the hill at a nice look-out point, which we got to by walking down into town, along the road, and up some steps, and then realised that it was literally metres away from our hotel if we'd turned left instead of right when we headed out.



It gave us a lovely view of the pier from above.


But the main reason we headed up this hill was to get here:



The Llandudno Cable Car. The longest passenger cable car system in Britain, apparently.



Time to head up the Great Orme in a little basket suspended on a wire!



Nice views.





And nice goats. These are Kashmiri goats, descended from a herd given as a gift to Queen Victoria.

We also got a good look at the Great Orme Tramway, which is the other way to reach the top of the Orme. More on that later.



At the top we were treated to lovely views of the hillside and the sheep, as well as the sea beyond.


Another thing they have at the top of the Great Orme is a tourist information centre, full of what you'd expect...

You know, the usual things you'd find at a tourist information centre...

Things like...

Leaflets...

Posters...



A giant Millennium Falcon...

Apparently a lot of people claim they get abducted by aliens from the Great Orme, so the tourist centre has a bit of a sci-fi vibe.

After getting the cable car up and back down we then went up the other way:



The Great Orme Tramway. Told you it'd be back later.

The views from the tramway are slightly less spectacular and it's a good thing we did it in this order, cos the wind picked up a lot and they stopped running the cable car not long after we took our ride.

The Great Orme is also home to the Great Orme Bronze Age Copper Mines:



We love a good mine, so we donned our hard hats and ventured in...





This would be a great place for a rave.


We decided to walk back down rather than take the tramway, but we still went into the Halfway Station

Walking down also gave us a slightly different view of the seafront, and I love that view so much I had to take a photo pretty much every time I saw it.




And we say goodbye to Llandudno with this picture I took that evening, cos I love towns and cities at night.


Now, we may be saying goodbye to Llandudno, but the trip wasn't quite over cos we still had to drive back home and there was more stuff to see along the way. Such as...





St Asaph's Cathedral.

And our final stop, the Pontcysyllte Aquaduct:





It's not a great place to walk if you're afraid of heights, so I ventured out alone while Paul waited behind.

And there we go! Thus concludes my trip to Wales. I possibly went a bit overboard with the pictures in this entry, but who knows how long it will be before I'll be able to go on another holiday and take endless photos again!
