Five Hours!

Is it stupid that I have had the same email open for five hours now and have resorted to banging my head on the table because I cannot write the stupid thing?

Yes. Yes it is.

Gah, writing emails is not rocket science. Just say what you want to say and send it! It's simple. And yes, you will end up sounding stupid and rude but that won't change no matter how many hours you take to write it.
