Dad's internal calendar is apparently a day out and he thought today was Shrove Tuesday, so we had pancakes. Because why not? And I feel like having pancakes on Ash Wednesday is perfectly in keeping with our family.

Moaning

The heating at work is still broken and it's fucking freezing. We have portable heaters, but they only warm up the area immediately around them and that leaves far too much of the place far too cold.

Possibly related to the cold, my knees are aching quite badly again. That's not much fun. Also, I banged my foot the other day and managed to vertically split the nail on my middle toe, which was more painful than I expected such a small thing to be.

But on the flip side to all this I got an email from Papa Johns earlier telling me that some of my points were going to expire at the end of today. I couldn't let them go to waste, so I now have a free pizza coming my way this evening. Yay free pizza.

Update

A lady from the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice came round this morning to talk to us. She was very nice and told us what services they offer, both for Dad and for us. She mentioned counselling and I'm sort of tempted but I'm so bad at talking to people I'd have no idea what to say. Still, it's good to know that it's an option.

Then this afternoon Dad went to his private appointment with the Hepatology professor. And from the sounds of it it went better than the other appointments have gone. There was talk about getting Dad into a trial, but apparently it's a bit too early yet (I'm not entirely sure what that means.) And he took some blood cos he wants to run his own tests and wants to see Dad again next week. I'm just so relieved that someone is actually doing something, that there's the possibility of hope, rather than just giving up like the other doctors did.

This is a depressing post to start the year on, but I feel I should explain why I've been away for a while. And it's probably good for me to get my thoughts down here:

crystalcazzie: (Christmas Decorations)
I went up to London at the weekend for mine and Paul's annual Christmas shopping trip. I think I might be getting a bit old for it though. Maybe next year I should do all my shopping online and we can just spend three days drinking mulled wine and eating gingerbread. Although if we do that then we do miss out on finding cool little shops and craft markets, which would be a shame.

On Saturday we went down to Brighton to have a look at what was there. The seafront was very bracing (read: windy) but I still loved it. And we found a lovely little craft market in a seafront tavern where I picked up a few things including some cute little Star Wars decorations which are now adorning my tree.

I didn't end up buying as much as I have in previous years, which is good. Still felt quite loaded down by the end of the weekend though!

In other news, my ear is bothering me again. I managed to go quite a long time without any issues, but it's now swollen and painful. I'm just taking ibuprofen and hoping it sorts itself out soon. Really hoping before Christmas and preferably before Friday evening when I have my work Christmas meal. I'm bad enough at socialising as it is without adding not being able to hear well into the mix!

Right, well, thoughts on that finale...

Doctor Who )
crystalcazzie: (Emo Darcy)
Apparently my mood is like a yoyo lately and right now it's definitely at a low point.

But with this post I have officially won NaBloPoMo for another year, so yay for that.
crystalcazzie: (DW Eleven/River)
I'm reading all these tweets about Alex Kingston at the Chicago Tardis con and I love it so much! The thought of Matt cornering her at HER WEDDING to tell her how jealous he is that she's doing Doctor Who with a different Doctor is everything to me.

Cos really, although I am getting more and more excited about the Christmas special, Eleven will always be River's Doctor and you will never convince me otherwise.
crystalcazzie: (DW River hair)
Not long now until Heaven Sent. I'm a bit wary about this episode because while I've definitely warmed up to Twelve, I'm not sure how I feel about an episode with just him. It's not even Twelve without a companion but with other characters, it's almost entirely him on his own. But apparently it's really good, so I shall wait and see.

Before that though, some more topics from the November meme:

22. You can add any new button to facebook (e.g. a dislike button, a stfu-about-your-kids button, etc...) -- what is it?

I remember talking with someone about Facebook once and we decided that "I don't care about your children" pretty much sums up our experiences with the site, so the stfu-about-your-kids button sounds pretty good to me. (I mean, I understand that as a parent you feel your child is wonderful and everything they do is worthy of documentation, but the rest of us really don't need to know every time they eat dinner or spend time with granddad or whatever else you want to share with us today.)

23. What's one goal you have for 2016?

Learn to drive. I really have to get over my fear and do it.
crystalcazzie: (Spock Yippee)
I have survived eight hours of retail work on Black Friday! I am rewarding myself with wine. I wanted to reward myself with wine and Strictly, but the tennis is overrunning. I hate tennis.

Actually, today wasn't too bad. Even, dare I say it, rather fun? We had a mountain of food in the staff room to eat during our breaks, I didn't have any horrible customers, I like the people I was in the stockroom with, and there was a nice sense of camaraderie as we all worked together to get delivery put away and take orders out as fast as possible.

And now it's the weekend. Woot!

Sigh

I really hate how awkward and incompetent I feel at work, even when I'm doing things that I know I know how to do. I always feel like everyone else is judging me and thinks I'm useless. And the fact that my manager is a rather sarcastic person in general and I can never tell if he's being serious or not really doesn't help.

Anyway, more November meme catch up:

19. What's the funniest thing you ever saw?

I honestly have no idea. But I still find myself amused by the "small parts and small balls" warning I occasionally see on things. I'm such a child.

20. What makes you happiest?

I don't think there's one thing that makes me happiest. Tilly makes me happy, spending time with my family makes me happy, watching TV makes me happy, reading fanfiction makes me happy. Seeing friends, going to pub quizzes, playing games, making things, building Lego, building jigsaws, drinking cocktails, eating pasta. All these things make me happy.

21. What's your favorite season?

Autumn.
crystalcazzie: (Made of Awesome)
Today was a wonderfully healthy and productive day in which I ate popcorn, watched The Dark Knight Rises, and made snickerdoodles.

I've heard characters in American shows mention snickerdoodles all the time but I had no idea what they actually were (beyond being some sort of cookie, obviously) and for some reason I'd always assumed they had nuts or something and I wouldn't like them. Turns out they're delicious and I definitely foresee myself making them again in the future!

And now it's time to catch up a bit more on the November meme:

16. What would you consider your spirit animal?

A manatee.

17. What's one good thing that happened to you today (or this week)?

New pictures of River Song in the Doctor Who Christmas special. And the resulting outpouring of love and excitement on Tumblr. Takes me back to the glory days of the Eleventh era when we all got excited over new episodes and flailed together. I miss those days.

18. What's one complaint you have today?

I don't know, today's been a pretty good day. I suppose I could say the Amazon Video app on the PS4 not working for some reason, but I quite enjoyed the sense of accomplishment I got from finding a way around the problem (by unplugging my Fire box from upstairs and bringing it down) so I can't really complain.

Yay TV

Going back to work after a week off is always such a fun adventure as I try to sort out the mess that my cash office has become. I wish I had time to just focus on that and nothing else, but of course we're getting busier and busier as Christmas creeps ever closer, so things are still a bit of a mess.

I'm falling behind with the November meme again, so I'll jump straight into...

15. If you were a politician, what would your first agenda be?

Exploring the Palace of Westminster. I know that's not what this question means, but I watched a programme about The Houses of Parliament a few months ago and it was really interesting seeing how things worked and all the weird little traditions they have. I'd be particularly excited for my first Division vote, where all the MPs have eight minutes to get from wherever they are in and around the building to reach either the Aye lobby or the No lobby to register their vote on a bill.

I might give a proper answer to this question when I have more time, but for now I have to watch University Challenge!

Thoughts on Face the Raven

Doctor Who Spoilers )
crystalcazzie: (Laura Roslin)
Face the Raven is on tonight and I'm not sure I'm ready for what's going to happen to Clara. Not that I have any idea what it is, mind. My current theory is that she'll be turned into a sort of non-evil bad guy (I wish I had a better way of explaining that) and the finale will be about the Doctor having to defeat/save her. But who knows. I haven't read any spoilers so this is a complete guess that may be way off the mark. (I did, however, have a dream that Matt Smith returned and Eleven and Twelve teamed up to save Clara together. So, you know, that would be cool.)

And I still don't have an idea for what will happen to her in the end, other than becoming Missy's companion which I really don't believe is actually going to happen, because I highly doubt they'll go ahead and kill her. And we know there's no way she'd be content with leaving the Doctor to settle down into a normal life. Maybe whatever happens to her changes her so much she can't go back to being human and so she has to go off and fulfil her destiny as Queen of the Universe or something. Or Queen of the Underworld. Maybe the Nethersphere wasn't as destroyed as we thought...?

Anyway, moving on to other TV shows, I decided to have a go at my favourite BSG episodes after all. It's so difficult though cos it's a show where the main storylines run over multiple episodes rather than each one being a distinct and discrete entity. And I binge-watched almost all of it so it all runs together in my mind. But here we go...

Battlestar Galactica:

1. The Oath
2. Blood on the Scales
3. Unfinished Business
4. Sine Qua Non
5. The Hub
6. Home parts 1 & 2
7. 33
8. Resurrection Ship parts 1 & 2

Perhaps you're right, [livejournal.com profile] rachg82, and this means it's time for me to do a rewatch. I think it's been long enough now that my heart can take being broken all over again! And with shows like this it is always interesting to go back to the beginning, seeing things from a new perspective with the knowledge of what's to come and who people really are. (Despite starting the show late, I did a very good job not being spoiled. I had no idea who the final five Cylons were, for example, or any of the relationships that were going to happen other than Roslin/Adama.)
crystalcazzie: (DW Eleven/River)
Apparently there's a favourite episodes meme going around LJ, so I thought I'd give it a go. And in doing so have discovered how bad I am at choosing favourite episodes.

I wanted to do BSG, but I just can't seem to think of it in terms of individual episodes. Other than The Oath and Blood on the Scales, which would definitely be on the list if I'd done one.

Doctor Who was quite easy. I have definite episodes of this show that I absolutely love and will rewatch again and again. Also, two-parters totally count as one episode for the purposes of this list.

Doctor Who:

1. A Good Man Goes to War
2. Let's Kill Hitler
3. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
4. The Wedding of River Song
5. Vincent and the Doctor
6. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
7. The Doctor's Wife
8. The Angels Take Manhattan

Any Doctor Who fans reading this will probably have noticed a slight bias in my choices, lol!

I'm also going to do Buffy and Castle, although with these I know that I may suddenly go 'Oh, wait, what about x?! How could I have left that out?!' cos I'm just going with what I can think of at this moment:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

1. Hush
2. Once More with Feeling
3. Tabula Rasa
4. New Moon Rising
5. Halloween
6. Amends
7. Gingerbread
8. What's My Line parts 1 & 2

Castle:

1. Probable Cause
2. Target/Hunt
3. Cops and Robbers
4. Cuffed
5. After Hours
6. Tick Tick Tick/Boom
7. Vertias
8. The Time of Our Lives
crystalcazzie: (Pearlswine Rat Greatness Personified)
Pub quiz yesterday went well. We were only a team of four this week but we still managed to come second, so yay for that! =D

I didn't spend long in London this morning. I walked along the river to Kingston and had a quick look in the shops before heading back. I was home before midday and then spent a lot of this afternoon making Christmas cards. I'm actually really pleased with how they've turned out and am very much looking forward to sending them to people!

Onto the November meme:

14. If someone offered you $1,000 to give up your cell phone for a year, would you do it?

Probably not, to be honest. Not because I'm a phone-addict (which I don't think I am. I still use pay-as-you-go and can go months without topping up.) but because it's so important to me to know I have a way to contact people. If I'm meeting up with someone it means we can let each other know where we are or if we're running late or if something has happened and plans need to change. When I had trouble with the trains on Sunday it was so useful to be able to call home and explain the situation and work out my next move. It's so freeing and reassuring to know I have that method of communication and I don't think I could give it up.
crystalcazzie: (Shalott)
I have this week off work and had all these plans of things I wanted to do, but now I'm just spending most of my time online. And going out. I'm off to the pub quiz again later today and I'm not sure what time I'll be back tomorrow. Hopefully it won't be too late and I'll get some stuff done then. I do like the pub quiz and it'll be lovely to go to one and not have to get up at 5am the next morning, but part of me was really looking forward to a few days uninterrupted at home to build jigsaws and make Christmas cards and watch films.

Anyway, I'm going to answer three of the November topics again today to try and catch up a bit more cos otherwise I can see myself answering these questions into next year!

11. If you could move anywhere, where would it be?

Probably London. I already live pretty close and go fairly regularly, but I'm still far enough out that it takes a while to get there and I have to get a lift to the station. I'd love to live somewhere with such good public transport that I was confident I'd be able to go where I wanted without having to rely on someone else. And there is so much to do in London.

12. If you could anonymously ban any pet peeve, what would it be?

People using 'immaculate conception' wrong. Jesus was not conceived by immaculate conception, Mary was. And it involved her parents having sex. The immaculate conception and the virgin birth are two different things, so stop throwing around the term when talking about pregnant girls who say they're virgins. It drives me up the wall!

13. If you could gain any skill/talent, what would it be?

To sing well. I've always loved singing and was in various choirs throughout school, college, and university, but I was never that good and always tried to hide my voice. I'd love to have been able to properly join in with confidence. And I always wanted to be in musicals. Still do, really.
crystalcazzie: (Tara)
Thanks to the Doctor Who Festival, I have fallen quite a bit behind in the November meme so I'll try to answer a few of the topics today:

8. Favourite childhood memory

Perhaps it's an odd one, but I have this memory of sitting in my grandparents' front room in Rye. My brother and I had pushed two chairs together to make a sort of boat that we were sitting in. Beside us we had a box of various sweets that we'd bought from Jempsons earlier, using the tiny little children's trollies they had there, and we were eating sweets while watching TV while sitting in our chair boat and I just remember feeling so happy and content.

9. Favourite childhood cartoon

So many to choose from, but I adored Postman Pat. Our first cat was black and white, so naturally we called her Jess.

10. Favourite video game

If we're talking PC then the Monkey Island games. They were just so good. And actually my memory of playing Monkey Island on the computer in the conservatory could be a contender for topic 8. We had a tin of sweets out there that I ate so many of while playing the game that they became known in my mind as 'Monkey Island sweets'.

If we're talking consoles, then I'd probably go with Lego Harry Potter. More recent, but still so much fun.
