I'm tired. So very tired. And to add insult to injury we didn't even win the quiz! It was so close though. We came joint third with 36 points, behind two teams who both scored 37! What makes it even more frustrating is that we had two questions where we put down an answer then changed it but our original answers were correct. If only we'd stuck with our first guesses we would have won. Dammit.

Now I'm just working on staying awake for the next couple of hours. I don't want to go to bed too early cos I don't want to mess up my sleep schedule, but it's so tempting.

But no, I shall resist. I shall answer the next question on the November meme instead.

Topic 7. Favorite picture of yourself:

I don't generally like pictures of myself, but I am quite fond of this one from my graduation:

no title

I hate my official graduation photo, so I'm very glad to have this one as well. I'm the one with long hair, which looks rather nice here I feel.

32

It's my birthday and I'm old! And possibly the slightest bit tipsy. We had champagne out on the patio earlier, and I'm currently drinking red wine cos we've just had dinner and yeah... slightly tipsy.

We went to Alresford today, which wasn't as interesting as I'd hoped it would be. But more interesting is the fact that this was the first year in a long time that I wasn't aware of the exact moment I turned a year older. Usually I'm watching the clock and am ready to mark the minute it happens, but today I just suddenly looked at the time and realised it had passed and I was officially 32. I wonder if that means anything.

I got a lot of lovely presents, including Doctor Who Cluedo and University of Kent Monopoly (I didn't even realise that latter one was a thing that existed until I opened it!) Mum has so far beaten me twice at DW Cluedo, which I find rather unacceptable on my birthday, but I am currently winning our game of University of Kent Monopoly. I am rather put out that she owns Keynes College though. That was MY college. I'm a Keynes alumna. I should own it, dammit!

I'm feeling quite sleepy and drunk and should probably go to bed soon. I might watch a River/Doctor episode of Doctor Who first though, to end the day on a high note.

Day 7

I've been sitting here for a while trying to think of something to post but failing. And now it's time to go watch University Challenge, after which I will be feeling quite smart/stupid*.

*Delete as appropriate after seeing how many questions I actually get right this week.

Day 3

Greetings, my adoring public. I am here to post another day. And it's good that I am. We've been having trouble with our internet connection and there was a truly terrifying moment where I thought it might not come back at all. I don't even have a smart phone so if the wifi goes down I'm lost. Stranded in a meaningless, internetless shadow of an existence. I shudder to even think of such a thing.

It's kinda funny how I went through all of university without having internet in any of the places I lived and had to rely on the computer rooms all the time. I look back on those days and wonder how I survived.

Four Days

This holiday weekend I have been mostly:

- Sitting on the patio to make the most of the lovely weather. In fact that is where I am right now. Next to me I have a glass which used to contain ginger beer but which is now empty. Alas.

- Watching Bones. Well, two episodes. They were good, although I still don't really get this whole rogue sniper storyline that came out of nowhere.

- Watching Chuck. I love Chuck. I think what I love most about Chuck is that it's a happy programme. You can watch it safe in the knowledge that everything will be all right in the end, good will triumph over evil, the people you love will be happy and Chuck and Sarah will be together.

- Watching 'William and Kate: The Movie'. Now, I went into this knowing that it was going to be amazingly bad but I simply wasn't prepared for just how excruciatingly dire it was going to be. It had everything you could hope for in an American TV film about British royals. Terrible accents! American plug sockets in supposedly British houses! Prince William publicly singing karaoke to apologise for ignoring Kate at his birthday party! The University of St Andrews apparently being renamed St Andrews College and looking absolutely nothing like the university that I visited a few years ago! Constant references to university as 'school'! (It's that last one that got to me the most. If I'd had a drink for every time I shouted "We don't call university 'school', you idiots!" at the TV I'd have been completely wasted before the film was halfway through.)

- Sorted out my room. And by 'sorted out' I mean 'moved stuff from one big pile into other, slightly more organised piles.' That's really the only way I do any kind of tidying up.

- Sleeping weirdly. Apparently my body has decided that during the holidays I need to wake up around 4, stay away until around 8 and then, just when I'm thinking I could probably get up at this point, become so tired I can't keep my eyes open until around 10:30. It's rather annoying.

- Building puzzleballs. Two today.

- Watching Doctor Who. I should have mentioned it earlier but I forgot. Possibly because it was a bit of a blah episode that didn't exactly grab my attention. Hopefully it'll be better next week.

Honours

So, I see my university has given Orlando Bloom an honorary degree. I suppose it makes sense, since he is Good Canterbury Folk, but can you imagine that ceremony? It must have been crazy! Looking at reports on the internet it sounds like he gave a much better speech than David Starkey did at my graduation. That's good.

Apparently Mr Bloom has fond memories of the duck pond on campus. I do too, Orli. I feel we have connected over this, and as I was in Keynes I also feel connected to the duck pond in a way that people from the other colleges can't understand. They didn't get the joy of realising that all an intruder has to do is find a way to get across the pond and then there are no barriers between them and our individual room doors.

I think we should get together some time and have a chat about good old UKC. Alan Davies can come too. :)

Ah, the end of the month is such a mixed blessing. It brings with it two equally true, yet diametrically opposed, equations:

On the one hand: Payday = Money = Buying stuff = YAY!

On the other hand: Other people's payday = Other people's money = Other people buying stuff = Bleugh.

Yeah, that was my rather roundabout way of saying that we were very busy today. They even called me in early because of it. So I am very, very tired right now, but not as stressed as I was cos I've hit the alcohol and am quite lightheaded already. That's just from one beer. Clearly I am getting old.

Although, having said that, the new stock manager at work did think I was around 19 or 20. He was shocked when I told him I was 26. Maybe I should take advantage of my apparent youth. Go back to uni, re-do my early twenties, be less of a social failure.

Or maybe I'll just have another drink.

Meme time! Only took me about a week to do this one!

Reply to this meme by yelling "Words!" and I will give you five words that remind me of you. Please post them in your journal and explain what they mean to you

I have two sets of words, because I am just that awesome. And it will soon become apparent that I did not take this meme entirely seriously...

Vegetarian

I’m a vegetarian, which means I don’t eat animals. And yes, that includes fish. Being vegetarian is the nice middle ground where I get to feel morally superior to meat eaters but can still look down on vegans and their crazy ways. (I am, of course, joking. I feel superior to everyone regardless of what they eat, in a John Crichton "Humans are superior!" way, complete with costume.)

Dog

I have a dog. Her name is Tilly, she’s deaf and she sheds her hair everywhere. Most of my clothes are now covered with white hairs. For some reason they shed much more than the black ones. I don’t know why, I’m sure there’s a reason. Perhaps I should look into it. Start up my own research project, get government funding then scrap the research and run off to Mexico, using the money to fund a life filled with sun, sand and margaritas. I’ll send for the rest of you when the government loses interest in finding me.

Degree

I have a degree. It is in History and Religious Studies and has been of no use whatsoever in my life since leaving university. I am currently doing a job that requires zero qualifications and could in fact be done by someone whose greatest academic achievement was a papier-mâché mask they made in first school. But on the bright side, I do work in a place where people make shop-wide announcements about chocolate chip biscuits. So it all evens out in the end.

Home

I have a home. It belongs to my parents but still, I live here, it’s my home. It’s a…bit of a mess, but that’s what happens when you’re from a family of hoarders. We’re all the same so there’s no one to challenge the status quo. And that is why my cause of death is almost certainly going to be “crushed under a pile of old junk.” I think that would be covered by the death benefit that I was offered at work the other day but didn’t take up (Yes, for the low low price of £2 a month my family would get £5000 in the event of my demise. Although not if my death was the result of suicide, war or exposure to nuclear radiation.)

Skirt

I wear skirts. A lot. I’ve always disliked trousers, although I do now have two pairs that I wear regularly. My jeanish ones, which are good for climbing and going to theme parks, and my work trousers. We have to wear trousers at work, which makes sense since it’s a very physical job and I climb a lot there too. Ladders, of course, not the racking. Climbing the racking would be naughty and I’m a good girl. Honest.

Canada

Canada is really big. It has bears and maple syrup and Mounties and Keith’s beer. Truly it is a wonderful place. Someday I hope to go back there and visit the places I missed out on before, and go back to the places that I loved. But not walk up that hill again. You know the one I mean, Mr Afterthought, THAT hill. And in case you were wondering, the answer is no. No, there will never be forgiveness for that hill.

Sleep

I assume this was put in cos I’m lazy. Thanks. I am a pig in the Chinese zodiac, which is supposed to mean that I’m lazy, so I guess it’s appropriate. Not that astrology really means anything. I’m also a Virgo, which means I should be exceptionally neat and, as we discussed three words up from this one, I most certainly am not. Plus I always remember what my physics teacher said – “Never confuse astronomy and astrology. Astronomy is science, astrology is bullshit.”

Animals

I like animals. I come from an animal-loving family and we’ve almost always had pets. I shall now list them for you in chronological order: Jess (cat), Breeze (dog), Lucky (hamster), Goldie (hamster), Dopey (hamster), Smartie (hamster), Minnie (rat), Evie (rat), Lily (rat), Rose (rat), Fury (cat) and Tilly (dog). Also McGee, who is technically the neighbours’ cat but spends most of his time here. His name is actually Gee, or possibly Ghee, but we changed it to McGee after the NCIS character.

Australia

Australia is a magical far-far away land that only exists in story books and daytime soap operas. In November my intrepid friend and I plan to attempt to visit this mythical place. If we survive the trip we will be sure to bring back evidence of the country’s existence. Perhaps in the form of a boomerang or cap that says “Pobody’s Nerfect.”

Mexico

One day we will call our families and say “Hey, yeah, we’re in Mexico.” That is the plan and hopefully it will happen without defrauding the government, but you know, if that’s what it takes. Personally I think we should have gone when the swine flu paranoia meant that everyone was avoiding the place and prices were really cheap. Plus it would have had the added advantage of making us look crazy. Or awesome. Or even crazy awesome. Mmm…crazy awesome.

My brother is a graduate. He has letters after his name. (He gets to be Bachelor of Science, which sounds so much more impressive than Bachelor of Arts. I'm jealous.)

Yes, Robert and Kat graduated today, which means I got to sit in a cathedral listening to names being read out and then sit in the sunshine drinking Pimms and eating strawberries. Much more fun than going to work.

It made me want to graduate again, though. Just a shame about the years of work that have to precede such an event. (Actually I do often wish I could re-do my graduation. There is so much about mine that I hate - I was quite a bit fatter then, my clothes look stupid and I was wearing awful, awful shoes. I especially hate my official graduation photo, which is of course the one my grandparents have up in their house.)

I was quite jealous about their gowns too. They had hoods. Actual hoods. Behold:

My Brother the Druid )

I took quite a few pictures using the camera John lent me and then I used Robert's camera to take some and, oh my god, I love his camera. I love it so much. I was leaning towards buying a high end digital camera rather than a DSLR but now I think I've changed my mind. I'd been put off by the size and the fact that they don't take movies (at least not the ones in my price range) but the picture quality is amazing and it's so fast. Now I'm going to have to do even more research into all this.

Of course it was helped by the fact that it was a lovely day. Perfect graduation weather really.

I keep trying to write an entry about the last few days but I'm too tired, so I'm just going to summarise things for you:

Monday - Unremarkable.
Tuesday - New power adaptor arrived. Able to use laptop again. Much joy.
Wednesday - Off to Aberystwyth. Very pretty.
Thursday - Interview for PCGE course at Aberystwyth. Didn't go well.
Friday - Out for drinks after work. Solved Eternity II clue puzzle 3 in about ten minutes in the pub. Feel very proud of self.
Saturday - Hasn't happened yet. Apparently will involve helium balloons and Love Hearts sweets at work. Sounds fun.

Rejection

Eh, screw you Reading. I didn't want to go to you anyway. You're stupid and... and you smell. *Sticks out tongue and runs away*

*Sidles up to Aberystwyth* Hey, there. You know I love you more. You want me, don't you? Right? Please...

PGCE

So my interview at Reading was today. I am not confident about my chances. I think I came across as a wishy-washy idiot who doesn't know why they want to do anything and is confused by simple questions. Oh well.

Next step: Alcohol.

Not Good

It's only been one day since I got my letter about the interview and I'm already sick with nerves. I'm seriously doubting my ability to make it through the next two weeks.

New Goal

Ok, I think I'm going to have to officially give up on the idea of completing NaNo. I doubt I can write the required number of words now that I have something else to focus on and stress me out for the next two weeks.

By which I mean an interview at Reading University for the PGCE course.

If you thought my posting about NaNo was bad, just wait as you watch me gradually become a complete and total wreck over the next fourteen days!

TRAITOR!!! DEFECTOR!!!

I was filling in my application form for Reading University Library when I came online to look up my tutor to put as a reference. My favourite lecturer from university. And what do I find? He's gone! No longer there! He has abandoned the glory that is Canterbury!

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL!

Do you know where he has gone? Of all the universities in all the country, do you know which one he picked?

THIS ONE!
