Seven years ago I made my Ships of the Noughties list. Recently it was suggested to me by [livejournal.com profile] dustinw5220 that I make a similar list for the nineties. I decided to expand on that a bit to include a whole century rather than just a decade because why not? As usual I found it difficult to decide which ships to include, so before we reach the main event I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge some of my favourite couples who didn't quite make the cut:

Honourable Mentions )

I've also decided not to double up, so Mulder/Scully, Xena/Gabrielle, Tom/B'Elanna, Harm/Mac, Willow/Tara, Piper/Leo, John/Aeryn, and Charlie/Zoey are not featured in this list because I already included them in my Ships of the Noughties.

And now, without further ado, I present to you...

There you go. I hope you enjoyed my Twentieth Century Ships and please feel free to leave a comment letting me know what you think!

I have survived eight hours of retail work on Black Friday! I am rewarding myself with wine. I wanted to reward myself with wine and Strictly, but the tennis is overrunning. I hate tennis.

Actually, today wasn't too bad. Even, dare I say it, rather fun? We had a mountain of food in the staff room to eat during our breaks, I didn't have any horrible customers, I like the people I was in the stockroom with, and there was a nice sense of camaraderie as we all worked together to get delivery put away and take orders out as fast as possible.

And now it's the weekend. Woot!

Going back to work after a week off is always such a fun adventure as I try to sort out the mess that my cash office has become. I wish I had time to just focus on that and nothing else, but of course we're getting busier and busier as Christmas creeps ever closer, so things are still a bit of a mess.

I'm falling behind with the November meme again, so I'll jump straight into...

15. If you were a politician, what would your first agenda be?

Exploring the Palace of Westminster. I know that's not what this question means, but I watched a programme about The Houses of Parliament a few months ago and it was really interesting seeing how things worked and all the weird little traditions they have. I'd be particularly excited for my first Division vote, where all the MPs have eight minutes to get from wherever they are in and around the building to reach either the Aye lobby or the No lobby to register their vote on a bill.

I might give a proper answer to this question when I have more time, but for now I have to watch University Challenge!

Apparently there's a favourite episodes meme going around LJ, so I thought I'd give it a go. And in doing so have discovered how bad I am at choosing favourite episodes.

I wanted to do BSG, but I just can't seem to think of it in terms of individual episodes. Other than The Oath and Blood on the Scales, which would definitely be on the list if I'd done one.

Doctor Who was quite easy. I have definite episodes of this show that I absolutely love and will rewatch again and again. Also, two-parters totally count as one episode for the purposes of this list.

Doctor Who:

1. A Good Man Goes to War
2. Let's Kill Hitler
3. The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang
4. The Wedding of River Song
5. Vincent and the Doctor
6. The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone
7. The Doctor's Wife
8. The Angels Take Manhattan

Any Doctor Who fans reading this will probably have noticed a slight bias in my choices, lol!

I'm also going to do Buffy and Castle, although with these I know that I may suddenly go 'Oh, wait, what about x?! How could I have left that out?!' cos I'm just going with what I can think of at this moment:

Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

1. Hush
2. Once More with Feeling
3. Tabula Rasa
4. New Moon Rising
5. Halloween
6. Amends
7. Gingerbread
8. What's My Line parts 1 & 2

Castle:

1. Probable Cause
2. Target/Hunt
3. Cops and Robbers
4. Cuffed
5. After Hours
6. Tick Tick Tick/Boom
7. Vertias
8. The Time of Our Lives

I have to say, based on the adverts and all the build-up, I expected Downton Abbey to have been a bit more wrapped up last night than it turned out to be. I suppose Mary getting married was something, even if it did happen ridiculously quickly, but all their declarations of love fell a bit flat cos Henry's left no impression on me whatsoever and it felt like their wedding came out of nowhere. I know their romance has supposedly been building all season, but it hasn't felt like it. (In fact this is the first time all year I've actually remembered his name, which says a lot about how invested I've been in this storyline!)

At least they finally acknowledged that Mary might have some issues being married to a man who races cars when her first husband died in a car crash. Of course this only merited a short scene and then it was all forgotten again, but still. That's probably the best you can hope for with Downton now.

And I still think Bertie's going to go back to Edith. That's going to happen in the Christmas special. It has to.

Anyway, onto the November meme. Topic 5 is Favourite Romantic Pairing:

Now, I know I've been saying that pretty much every single topic so far is a tricky one, but this is definitely the hardest yet. Shipping is such a huge part of my fandom life and, as with TV shows, I usually go through stages of being super obsessed with a ship for a while before finding a new one and becoming super obsessed with that, but just because my super-obsession has moved on doesn't mean that I don't still love the old pairings or ship them any less. So rather than trying to pick one, I'm going to go with a top ten eleven in no particular order:

1. Eleven/River (Doctor Who)
2. Roslin/Adama (BSG)
3. Sydney/Vaughn (Alias)
4. Willow/Tara (Buffy)
5. Michael/Sara (Prison Break)
6. Chuck/Sarah (Chuck)
7. Xena/Gabrielle (Xena)
8. Castle/Beckett (Castle)
9. Max/Logan (Dark Angel)
10. Mulder/Scully (The X Files)
11. Brennan/Booth (Bones)

Even this was difficult and I keep thinking of other pairings that I could have put on the list. I may have a bit of a shipping problem...

So, day 4 of the November meme is Favourite Show. This is such a tricky one cos I love TV and go through stages of being super obsessed with various shows, so my answer to this can change so much depending on when you ask me. In times gone by I might have said Alias or Prison Break or Voyager. A couple of years ago I'd have said Doctor Who without a doubt. I've started to drift away from it now, cos I don't love Twelve as much as I did Eleven, but I'd still say it's a strong contender. And it gives me a good segue into this:

My costume for the Doctor Who Festival next weekend. I'm a bit worried that I look more like a waiter than the Doctor...

If only I'd bought the official replica of his coat when I was at the 50th anniversary convention a couple of years ago. If it hadn't been ridiculously expensive I totally would have done, but alas. Still, I'm hoping that the sonic screwdriver (and the fact that it's a Doctor Who convention) will make it clear to people that I am, in fact, the Eleventh Doctor and not there to take drink orders.
crystalcazzie: (DW River hair)
Ah, PMS. How much do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I can't decide if my favourite part is the way my mood plummets so far down that I end up feeling absolutely hopeless and suicidal, or the way that my sensitivity to sounds increases so much that I feel like clawing out of my skin just by being near other people and the noises they make, which, when coupled with my extra irritability, leaves me feeling constantly on the verge of screaming at someone for simply existing. Or possibly bursting into tears, which I can't imagine would go down very well either.

And let's not forget the inability to concentrate on anything for more than a few seconds and the almost constant nausea and tiredness. So many super happy fun time things to choose from!

Ahem.

Moving on...

I found a lump on Tilly's leg on Sunday. We took her to the vet and they took a sample. They called yesterday and it's not malignant, which is a relief, but they're also not sure what it is. We're going to keep an eye on it and if it looks like it's getting bigger we're going to take her in to have it removed. The thought of that does worry me though, cos she's such a nervous dog. I don't want her to think we're abandoning her there!

Also, last night was pub quiz night. After our aberration of fourth place a few weeks ago we were back to full strength and back on top once again. So that was fun. I'm not sure the early start this morning has helped my mood any, but I still think it's worth it.

I've been considering writing an entry about the latest episodes of my TV shows, but at the moment it would mostly be me complaining and that's no fun. Hopefully I'll feel better in a few days and in a better position to talk about them.
crystalcazzie: (DW River hair)
I went to my friend's wedding yesterday and since I came home this morning I've pretty much just sat on the sofa catching up on all the TV I missed while I was there. I still feel completely worn out though. Socialising is hard. Also staying right till the end of the reception and then not sleeping well on top of that. Those things probably don't help either.

I plan on making a more in-depth post about the wedding soon cos it was something that filled me with anxiety (seriously, I was far too nervous for someone who had absolutely no part to play other than show up) and I'm mostly proud of how well I coped, but I am le tired (and apparently still referencing memes from well over ten years ago) so I shall do it later.

Oh Dear

I made the mistake of going to TV Tropes and now I have 25 tabs open and no hope of escape.

It was nice knowing you all.
crystalcazzie: (DW River hair)
I had lunch with Emma and Paul yesterday. She showed me Captain America so I am now ready to watch Agent Carter and see if it really is as good as my Tumblr dash and FMM would have me believe.

Today I had to go down into the field and free the neighbour's pony who'd managed to get his leg caught in our fence. He didn't seem overly bothered though, still eating grass while his leg was sticking up behind him all caught up in the wire.

Also, apparently 'untangler' is not a word. I am disappoint.

Wow, Alex Kingston looked absolutely amazing on NCIS. If anything she looks even more stunning now than she did two decades ago.

I suspect witchcraft.

So, [livejournal.com profile] rachg82 has suggested that I talk about TV, a subject which is very close to my heart, so I'm going to give it a go:

Annoyingly I have fallen behind in a lot of my TV watching. The new series of Bones hasn't started here yet and doesn't look like it's going to any time soon. I might try and find it online and catch up with the new episodes over the weekend.

I'm also about a season behind with NCIS, although I'm going to have to skip ahead and watch the upcoming episode with Alex Kingston in because it has Alex Kingston in and I will need to see it in order to properly flail with everyone on Tumblr.

I'm still not entirely happy with Merlin. But despite all my talk of giving up on it I'm still hopeful that it may pull it all back and wow me with a brilliant resolution to this storyline that makes up for all the crap it's putting me through now.

No new Doctor Who until Christmas. I absolutely loved the minisode and trailer that were shown on Children in Need last week. I'm so excited to see Jenna as the new companion and to find out how Clara and Oswin are going to be explained. I'm still hoping that they're the same character, but I also don't want Oswin's death to be Clara's end. So who knows what I want.

I've downloaded three episodes of American Horror Story: Asylum but haven't actually watched them yet. They're on the Sky box so I have to watch them in the living room and it's really not the kind of show I want to be watching when other people are around. Which is pretty much all the time. I shall have to work something out.

Recently we've been watching Elementary. It's good. I like it. Very different to Sherlock and, to be honest, other than the fact that the main character is named Sherlock Holmes it doesn't really seem related to the Sherlock Holmes stories at all. It's just another American drama series. Not that that's a bad thing, of course.

Downton Abbey finished a couple of weeks ago. I miss it already. I'm also worried that after that lovely, non-heartbreaking end to series three, which left everyone relatively happy and settled, the Christmas special is going to be full of misery and death. I don't trust that Julian Fellowes.

Right, well, I think that's everything for now. TV is fun.

Hmm.

I didn't feel well today so I spent most of my afternoon curled up on the sofa watching episodes of Chuck while the dog and the cat cuddled up to me. It was a nice way to spend a Saturday.

Also, I have just seen the Coca Cola advert. That means it is officially Christmas.
crystalcazzie: (DW River hair)
Oh my god! Flailing so much over the Doctor Who minisode and trailer on Children in Need!

I need to make a post so I don't lose at NaNoBloPo. The main topics on my mind at the moment are as follows:

1. My 10,000th post on Tumblr was a success. I was seriously worried that people would think I was stupid for posting it, but so far everyone seems to like it. This makes me happy.

2. I'm thinking I should watch American Horror Story. Between Rach here and Caro on Tumblr, I'm hearing a lot about it and how good it is. I just hope it's not going to freak me out too much.

3. I'm cold.

That's about it. As you can see, my mind is a powerhouse of brilliance. And the title of this entry may be a lie.
crystalcazzie: (DW River hair)
Happy Guy Fawkes Night, everyone. I'm going to celebrate by making dinner and watching University Challenge. Party hard.

I have returned from the 11th Hour convention! And yes, I had a brilliant time. That's not to say there wasn't some serious anxiety, but I got through it and the good parts of the weekend definitely outweighed the bad.

Here, have some ramblings about my time there:

The 11th Hour Report )

So the new Doctor Who companion was announced today. I also had today off work. I could pretend that I'm such an obsessive Whovian that I took the day off specifically because of this, but actually I'm just using up my last few remaining holiday days and booked this time off before we knew when the announcement was going to be. Still, it all worked out pretty well cos it meant I had the day to flail and panic and react and try to get my feelings under control.

I did write up an initial response and posted it on Tumblr earlier, so I think I'll just copy and paste it here. It's my thoughts about the announcement of the new companion and also about a tweet by the Doctor Who account regarding something Moffat said about the method of Amy and Rory's departure. So, you know, spoilers.
